How does executive functioning work in the brain?
Executive function and self-regulation skills depend on three types of brain function: working memory, mental flexibility, and self-control. These functions are highly interrelated, and the successful application of executive function skills requires them to operate in coordination with each other.
Examples of Activities That Improve All Executive Functions
  1. The arts (music, dance, theater, etc.)
  2. Sports, especially open-skill sports like soccer or basketball.
  3. Traditional martial arts, which emphasize self-control, discipline, and character development. ...
  4. Wilderness survival.
  5. Woodworking.
  6. Cooking
