What are the objectives of collage making?

Collage can help children to
  • learn skills such as gluing, sticking, taping, stapling, cutting, tearing.
  • experiment with different resources.
  • social skills students share with other children as they share materials and tools.
  • be creative and learn about design, patternmaking, dimension and composition.
  • gain concentration skills
  • Making a collage helps your child build fine motor skills. It's also a fun way to encourage your child's awareness of color and texture.
  •   if you talk with your child about his collage, it helps his language development too

MAKING A COLOR/SHAPE COLLAGE – LESSON PLAN

Students create collages to explore the use of warm/cool colors, value, shade/tint, mood, balance, pattern, complementary colors, and overlapping colors and shapes.

  • Length: 1-2 class periods
  • Grades: 4-5

Concepts/Objectives:

  • Students will make collages using the elements of art and principles of design.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the terms collage, warm/cool colors, value, shade/tint, mood, balance, pattern, complementary, and overlapping.
  • Students will become familiar with works by Picasso, Monet, Matisse, and Stuart Davis.
