Can occur at any stage of learning new information 

When a student has difficulty retaining what they see or hear when learning new information 

Usually happens in toddlers, infants, or children ages 6-7

Cause students to have frustrations with ordinary socks, such as organizing colored socks

What are the different types of Visual Perceptual Abilities?

 

Visual Discrimination

Could have difficulty seeing the difference between 2 letters

 

Visual figure- ground Discrimination Issues

When students mix up different letters and numbers. Ex: d and b, p and q



Visual sequencing issues

Children have difficulty telling the order of symbols, words or images. They have difficulty writing answers. They might skip lines when writing or write in reverse 

Visual- motor processing issues

Student with this have difficulty understanding eye contact to coordinate movement 

Long/ Short term visual memory issues

  Children with either type of difficulty have difficulty recalling what they see. 

Visual- Spatial Issues

When students have difficulty telling where objects are in space. Students might also have difficulty judging time and reading maps.

 Students have difficulty identifying an object when only parts are visible. They might not recognize certain facial features. They also have difficulty recognizing when a letter is missing. 

Letter and symbol reversal issues

These students switch letters or numbers hen writing. They have trouble with letter formation. 

Research-Based Interventions/ Evidence Based Practices 

Word-Problem Mnemonics 

This provides a framework for word solving problems. Some word problem mnemonic can be used for solving simple word problems. 

Schema-Based Instruction/ Schema- Broadening Instruction  (SBI) 

A way to teach problem- solving identification utilizing scaffolding student learning 

Concrete- Representational- Abstract 

Students use hands on materials that represent mathematical problems with numbers and symbols 

Math Peer- Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS)
