  • Assess reading because these skills are needed to monitor development in the classroom. Diagnostic tests can help all students learn to read quickly
  •  Technology text to speech to print can be used without prereq. Reading skills and is a useful tool. Research still need to be done to address issues of when we need to use reading interventions and teaching children to read (reading accommodations).
  • Cannot predict who and who will not learn to read when we access and intervene. 
  •  Reading this chapter, I was interested in finding out that Reading skills are needed to live and thrive in our society.
  • Assess math provides information so that the teacher can make decisions on the student’s mastery of math instruction. All schools teach math facts and concepts.
  •  It gives the teacher an idea of what kind of students she is working with. It shows the teacher what is working and what is not.

data is used to make eligibility decisions for special leaning needs eligibility. That t Math is one of the categories of Data a teacher needs to keep.


We need to assess written language because Well-developed written skills are essential and desired ability to express feelings and thoughts in writing.

 why do we  assess written language?

 I knew that written language is taught in schools but did not realize we assessed this skill for we assess for IDEA. I also did not realize that Written and oral languages used to screen to decide for instructional planning, modifications, eligibility and progress monitoring . 

The research says that writing fluency, content, number words written and the percentage of correctly written words need to be assessed .when we choose achievement tests that parallel to the instruction program, do we do this as a grade team of individually? 

 Of does the school? 

What about a private school?

 Is test in the native language for writing also?

 

  • Measure of intelligence
  • We measure intelligence through testing. Intelligence tests are used to inform special education eligibility decisions for services for both Intellectual disability and Learning disability. the scores on intelligence tests meaningfully tell us about instructional decisions. But I did not know that Iowa does not use these tests. I wonder why this is the case? Iowa doesn’t use intelligence testing, and it is controversial, but we still use in Florida? If using intelligence tests (subtests) has errors why do we still apply? When identifying students having learning disabilities, if this test doesn’t help make decisions, what should we be using?
  • Requires that for kiddos to get special services, the child must be assessed. The teacher must determine the adaptive behavior .this process must be done correctly so that the child gets the right interventions. We need to measure social and emotional behavior.

  There are two reasons for assessing social and emotional behavior .the first is identification and classification. And the second reason we assess is for so that as a teacher, we can decide on what intervention planning needs to take place.

  For autism under IDEA that to classify a child, the teacher needs to assess the social and emotional behavior.
